If there is one person running the family budget, should the other people in the family hold this person accountable, and how? (Result) |

In any area of responsibility, one should be held accountable for his/her actions, choices, decisions. How to hold accountable, I am not sure. If the person
handling the budget makes alot of mistakes or does not set priorities, or budgeting is not one of their strong points, that responsibility should go to someone
who can better manage the finances and budgets.
I also believe that each person should be aware of the family budget, as they may need to step in at some time to manage said budget themselves. All three of us had handled the family budget at one time or another and I finally decided I wanted that responsibility, control freak that I am! Our check book was always available to each person and was up to date with current balance. A quick look at the check book would tell us exactly where we were at. We each had an allowance of sorts which we could spend, save, pool together for something we all wanted, etc. While ES was here she had owned some property which has remained her property. She also invested a large sum in her sister's title closing company and she has that investment that is her's alone. With her monthly income, ES can live quite comfortably. Dee is a thrifty person and a saver. So she has saved a tiny nest egg for whatever she decides to choose that it is for. I am a spender, so paying the bills helps curtail that for me. I save change and roll it as a habit, but also have been making more of a concerted effort to NOT spend when it's not necessary. We had to cut back on fun stuff when medical bills for all 3 of us began coming in. I like to stay stockpiled on food, personal needs and household items, so I look for deals and sales and then purchase if/when funds allow. Dee & I had a routine for grocery shopping to stretch our dollars. We hit every store & every sale, plus buy canned goods at sav a lot by the case. I could save us $120/month if we gave up satelite, but ES could not have lived without it and Dee likes to have it available for nights we just want to veg. Besides, we are hooked on "Big Love" now! I could another save $120/month if I quit smoking (touche!) So there is compromise.
Be Well,
Bud
