Dee is queen of getting a bargain...she rarely buys if it's not on sale or marked down. That goes for food too!
My mother used old jeans to make quilts for my brother & I....those babies are toasty warm! We collect rainwater in 55 gallon barrels for emergency bathing, watering gardens, etc. And have 20 some emergency 5 gallon chemical buckets of water for use for flushing toilets only Use coupons whenever you can...out to eat, the grocery store, almost everyone offers coupons We try to buy a side of beef each year as it costs less than meat in the store....we buy canned goods in bulk by the case We raise chcikens and ducks so we always have fresh eggs and extra ones to sell (I can't dress a chicken so we don't use them for meat.) We bargain hunt anywhere: yard sales, thrift shops, pawn shops, freecycle, etc. We have often bartered with friends, neighbors for goods and services

Just a note after reading what Bud said we trade our horse poop to an organic farmer for a side of beef. It makes cleaning up after the horses so much easier.
lol
We recycle our egg cartons in trade for eggs from a local amish guy. We buy our chicken directly from Gold n Plump which is only 50 miles away - Try buying directly from the vender it helps alot. I wash 99% of my clothes in Cold water and I have my hot water heater turned down. We take the kids swimming ALOT and we shower there. It costs alot to heat our water. Even though since we switched from Propane to natural gas it has been better. My kids and I volunteer twice a week at the soup kitchen and then we get free meals. I buy items way way in advance. I have a room just with extras. Lets say when summer hit. Walmart will sell all there sweats for 1 then I buy them out and save them 1 ,3 years for the kids-Stuff that really never goes outta style cause it is cheaper then garage sales. There is a lady who has twin boys alomost exactly a year older then mine before she has her garage sale every year she calls me and I buy all her stuff and it is matchy matchy the way I like. On sundays after church we walk around Sams club for lunch lol it fills us up. Okay so now everyone knows I am a werido Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Forget about the one's who don't. Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it. |

Here's a couple of things that I've learned to do that help me to avoid unnecessary expenditures. They're simple but really effective
When I go to the grocery shop to stock up for the week I make sure to eat well at home first. This helps to curb the impulse or craving buying lol. If I'm full then the temptation to add that extra bag of chips or cake isn't as appealing. If I plan on going shopping for clothing or out in a mall with friends then I take a limited amount of cash with me, usually a pre-set limit. I figure that if I don't have it with me then I can't spend it. |

this might necessarily vary according to family size but here goes, shop at bulk stores,(ie Costco, Bjs etc.) we shop four times a year (we buy enough to last
3 months) for those who can't have a garden or raise their own animals canned goods are a good way to go, for those who cringe at canned products frozen is
also good (if you have a deep freeze this is even better) buy fresh fruit and veggies direct if possible and freeze or can. Our only hitch is that we only eat
fresh meat so that can be expensive but many freeze meat so again buy in bulk,(if you buy at one of the above stores, divide the meat into smaller freezer bags
when you get home) date and label. We do our clothing shopping seasonally as well, for some as long as you have a strong closet already you only need to add
one or two new things there are lots of clothing choices that can last for years. The trick for us is buying quality it might be a bit more expensive but they
last longer and does not need to be replaced as often (with kids this might differ as they grow at astronomical rates in some cases) one of my sisters was in
the habit of buying her son's school shoes a size over which i thought was nuts and unhealthy but she says it works.
Bud to dress a chix (this is assuming you're interested) 1) ring the chix neck/ cut it and let the blood drain out by holding it upside down 2)soak chix in hot water to cover until feathers are well soaked 3)remove chix from water and work against the grain to remove feathers (hold chix upside down and use fingers to peel feathers off) now comes the fun part wash chix in cold water remove head if not already done make incision between legs and remove insides (you're on your own) Grace and Peace Shara |

Bud to dress a chix (this is assuming you're interested) Thanks for the info shara. ES was the one who did the dressing as I am too weak stomach for it. I can put down an injured or sick animal, but I even quit fishing because I just couldn't clean the fish anymore. If worse came to worse and I need to do this for my family to eat, I would do it, but would not eat any myself and would probably cry about killing the chix. ES would skin the chix so she did not have to remove the feathers; guess it just depends if you like the skin on or not. Thanks again for the info, though. You never know in these days what skills you might need to survive.

Go veggie (at least a couple days a week).
Meat is expensive. Do not buy too much fresh food at once, invariably some of it will go off and it is a waste. Learn to knit, it is fun and you can make lovely winter warmers for the family. Don't waste energy, my aunt and Uncle regularly fall asleep with all the lights on, I hate to imagine what their bills are like. Be experimental with your cooking, soups, stews and fresh raw salads save on cooking (one pot or raw food) and are also healthy and nutritious. Avoid too much packaged food, it is expensive. Porridge. Tell the family you are honouring your Scottish roots during the winter, even if you don't think you have Scottish roots you probably do, the Scots got everywhere. |

Home haircuts....I just got mine today. Mine is easy, I wear a "high & tight", marine haircut. We have a good set of trimmers and it's great
if your boys (or girls) like the short buzz cuts. I used to cut Dee's hair, but my fingers aren't nimble enough to do it anymore.
If you color or perm your hair, you can save money by doing it at home....make it a day for the girls. Home pedicures and manicures. BTW, I love everyone's ideas & input, this is a great topic!

Bud, I understand. The one time I put down an injured animal I had nightmares for weeks.
H thanks the chicken for its spirit and for giving us food before he does it. I have done the rest of the dressing, cutting up, etc. I have to get my head around it before I start or it will flip my stomach. But I can do the plucking, remove the insides, etc. after I prepare myself for it. Kind of have to let my hands do the work while I think about something else. We don't waste food. If we don't eat it, it goes into dog soup (for the dogs, not made from dogs!), fed to the chickens or composted for the garden. |

I do alot of shopping on Craigslist, I never pay retail for anything! I have gotten 2 full bred beautiful dogs, and a beautifully decorated house thanks to
ole Craig. I also buy all of my greenery from garage sales and Dollar Tree, I cant afford Hobby Lobby and Garden Ridge, they are WAYYYY too expensive!

I love this thread I am glad I put it in here. I do home haircuts. Infact, this week I've done 4 of our children.
Antony does our manicures. Isn't he sweet! Antony and Sarah Eve participate in Freecycle; infact, she got us a deep freezer on it. We need a 15 passenger van because we have 13 people in our family, but no luck with that one yet. LOL!!

Drink water!
I stayed in a homeless shelter in my early days and the host family always drank only water with their evening meal; excluding the young children who needed to be drinking milk. They did this for several reasons: To remember that not all people in this world have the easy access to clean drinking water that we have It taught their children a healthy alternative to sodas, kool-aide & other such sugary or caffinated drinks From that time I have always drank water at dinner and drink it as my main cold drink....and am thankful to have it. When we eat out, I order water with my meal. Being in the hot South, we always take water bottles with us every where we go. It quenches thirst better than any other cold drink. I'm sure there must be some sort of savings in drinking water....maybe even keeping the body healthier, so less trips to the doctor's office?

I don't buy fizzy drinks, they are treats for parties, my girl only has water and was brought up that way, she hardly ever asks to drink something fizzy or
artificial, she likes juices and smoothies though so if she has a choice she will buy those.
Get them while they are young, it is hard to wean a child off of these things once they hit a certain age. When my girl was very little, we went on a really long train journey and I made the mistake of giving her a fizzy orange drink, my sweet little child turned into a demon that WHOLE journey. I NEVER brought her a fizzy drink again. Sugar + Artificial colours/flavours = demon kids. |

On the note of craigslist- I post my kids wish list on Craigslist a couple of months before thier birthdays or Christmas and let others know what I am looking
for and that I will pay a reasonable price. It keeps me out of the stores to overspend and the kids get exactly what they want. Most of the time the stuff is
in such awesome condition that you can't tell its not new and I save a bundle.
I also sell quite a bit on craigslist. Its free advertising and I get a good price for my stuff. And freecycle is awesome everyone should check out the site in thier town.
