Effective communication includes active listening. What does active listening mean? First, the listener must hear what is being said to him/her. This person must focus on the speaker and the speaker alone. They must not be thinking about what they will say when its his/her time to speak. How can you tell if you really heard what was said to you? If you can actually recall what was said to you, then you heard correctly. Second, the listener needs to understand what was spoken to him/her. Its important to check for understanding by restating what was said to the speaker and to ask for clarification. Third, the listener needs to judge if he/she believes this or if it makes sense logically?
